Teen Read Week celebrated at libraries
Public libraries statewide are celebrating Teen Read Week Oct. 14 through20.
Libraries will feature artists from the University of Hawaii at Manoa Outreach College’s Statewide Cultural Extension Program including contemporary Hawaiian dance company Huliau, led by artistic director and kumu hula Michael Pili Pang, who will bring to life Hawaiian rituals, myths and legends of Hawaii and its culture storyteller Ben Moffat; mask maker Yuki Shiroma; and the Galliard String Quartet and Spring Wind Quintet from Chamber Music Hawaii.
West Hawaii events include:
c Huliau performs at 6:30 p.m. Monday at theNorth Kohala Public Library, 889-6655;
c Ben Moffat’s “Stories on Stilts and Other Tall Tales” appears at 1 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Naalehu Public Library, 939-2442, and 10 a.m. Nov. 13, Honokaa Public Library, 775-8881;
Public libraries statewide will also host free programs focusing on this year’s Teen Read Week theme — “It Came from the Library.”

Ukulele lessons offered by county
The Hawaii County Culture and Arts office is offering ukulele lessons Wednesdays at Hale Halawai. Roselle Fujihara teaches beginning ukulele from 4 to 5 p.m. and intermediate ukulele from 5 to 6 p.m. Classes start Oct. 31 in the back room of Hale Halawai.
The cost for the eight-sessions class is $40.
Song sheets will be provided; students need to bring their own ukulele, binder with plastic sheet protectors, and a pen or pencil. A minimum participant count is needed for both classes.

Free HIV testing offered
Free 20-minute HIV testing will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 16 and 30 at the West Hawaii Community Health Center. For more information, call 331-8177.
Dance clubs plan Night of Elegance
Kona and Waimea Ballroom Dance Clubs present Night of Elegance from 6 to 11 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Water’s Edge Ballroom at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. The event features a dinner buffet and dancing with live music by The Loren Wilkens Band.
Tickets are $70 per person and formal or elegant aloha attire — no shorts— is required. Self parking is $5.

SKEA planning dinner fundraiser
The Society For Kona’s Education & Art will hold Eat, Laugh, Spend … Again, a Dinner Auction benefit, from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Keei Cafe in Kainaliu. The evening will include live music and entertainment, silent and live auctions, and a dinner prepared by the staff of the Keei Cafe using fresh, local ingredients.
Proceeds will benefit SKEA’s two main programs for children — the Art of Learning (art education in the public schools), and Art Camps at the SKEA site in Honaunau.
